Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior forward Matt Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) leads the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to a 1-0 triumph over Penn State Harrisburg in Capital Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon.
The win snaps a two-match skid for the Seahawks (5-7-2, 2-3-0 CAC) who are now tied with Wesley College for the sixth and final CAC championship tournament berth. St. Mary's and Wesley both have two conference wins under its belts but Wesley holds the head-to-head tiebreaker following its 2-1 double overtime win over the Seahawks on October 2.
St. Mary's has three regular-season games left – vs. University of Mary Washington, vs. Salisbury University and vs. Christopher Newport University – in which to secure a playoff spot.
Following a scoreless first half, Braun found the back of the net five minutes into the second stanza. First-year forward Matthew Yurich (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) sent a cross from the left side towards the far post where Braun volleyed the ball high in the air and it dropped inside the goal just behind first-year Brandon Hoover (Lancaster, Pa./Pequea Valley).
The Seahawk defense held Penn State Harrisburg (3-10-1, 0-5-0) to just four shots and two corner kicks in extending the Lions' scoreless streak to 627 minutes. St. Mary's fired off 18 shots and collected six corner kicks for the game.
Senior captain Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) posted two saves in notching his third shutout of the season while Hoover finished with six stops in the Lions' sixth straight loss.
The Seahawks hope to continue their winning ways when they host Mary Washington in Seahawk Stadium on Wednesday, October 23 at 4:00 pm.
