St. Mary's Men's Soccer Downed by Mary Washington

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference setback at the hands of the University of Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon.

Not mathematically eliminated, the loss now forces the Seahawks (5-8-2, 2-4-0 CAC) to notch at a win and a draw in their final two games of the regular season. St. Mary's is currently tied for the sixth and final conference playoff berth with Wesley College but Wesley holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Most of the first half was contested in the midfield. Mary Washington (10-6-0, 4-3-0 CAC) posted an 8-1 shot advantage but only two were on target.

The Eagles headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead as Mary Washington capitalized on a defensive breakdown at the far left post. First-year forward Riley Fisher (Staunton, Va./Stuart Hall School) found the back of the net at 42:00 off a short pass by first-year Guy Cross (Arlington, Va./St. John's College).

Mary Washington tacked on two more goals in the second half in less than four minutes as senior forward Kevin Murphy (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) tallied a goal and an assist. The damage could have been worse but senior captain Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) came up with four point blank saves to keep it at 3-0. The Eagles finished with an 18-4 shot advantage and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks.

Brown made five saves in the game while first-year Ian Waltz (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls) and junior Jack Eaton (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) joined forces for Mary Washington's fifth shutout of the season.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Sunday, October 27 when they welcome No. 12 Salisbury University to Seahawk Stadium for a conference match at 1:30 pm. Prior to the start of Sunday's game, the Seahawks six seniors will be honored.
