Seahawk Men's Soccer Battles No. 12 Salisbury on Senior Day

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team was step-for-step with No. 12 Salisbury University Saturday afternoon but a pair of late Salisbury goals put the Seahawks on the short end of a 2-0 Capital Athletic Conference loss on Senior Day.

Today's loss eliminates St. Mary's (5-9-2, 2-5-0 CAC) from playoff contention with one game left in the regular season. The Seahawks take on league newcomer Christopher Newport University in the season finale on Wednesday, October 30 at 3:00 pm in Seahawk Stadium. A win over CNU will not help the Seahawks as Wesley College (8-8-2, 3-4 CAC) holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Senior captain Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) had a solid game for St. Mary's, holding the nationally-ranked Sea Gulls (15-2-0, 7-0-0 CAC) scoreless in the first half. Brown made four saves on eight shots faced and five corner kicks taken by Salisbury in the opening period.

The Seahawks kept up their stingy defense in the second stanza as Salisbury continued to pepper the goal. The Sea Gulls finally ended the scoreless draw in the 81st minute as junior defender Logan Becker (Pocomoke, Md.) lofted a long pass from the left sideline into the penalty box where Brown bobbled the catch as he was hit and junior forward Matt Greene (Rockville, Md./Magruder) was there to put it away.

Salisbury added an insurance goal at 88:35 as senior Adam Quigley (Laurel, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) gave a short pass inside the box and junior forward Tanner East (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) found the back of the net for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Brown finished the afternoon with six stops as Salisbury posted a 21-3 shot advantage and an 11-1 corner kick margin. Sophomore Drew Staedeli (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) denied one shot in recording his eighth shutout of the season.
