St. Mary's Volleyball Drops Marathon Match at Marymount (Va.)

Arlington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team played their fourth five-set match of the season as the Seahawks took on Marymount (Va.) University in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday night. Marymount outlasted the Seahawks, 3-2, to secure a home first-round match.

Even with the loss, St. Mary's is still in the hunt for one of the last two playoff spots in the 2013 CAC Volleyball Championship Tournament which begins Tuesday, November 5th with first-round action. The Seahawks are battling with Frostburg State University and York College of Pennsylvania for the last two berths.

First-year setter Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a season-best 40 assists and 18 digs while sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) picked up a team-best 16 kills.

The Seahawks (16-9, 2-5 CAC) claimed a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 win in the first set as the team never trailed in the game and Goodspeed tallied a third of the team's 15 kills. St. Mary's carried its momentum into the second set, posting another 25-20 set win behind another four kills by Goodspeed.

Marymount (18-11, 5-2 CAC) regrouped and answered back with a 25-21 triumph in the third set, cutting the Seahawks' lead to 2-1. The game was tied six times and the lead changed three times. Back-to-back kills broke a 15-15 draw and returned the advantage to the Saints for good. Marymount struck again in the fourth set with a 25-17 win as the Saints had a more efficient attack with 18 kills to St. Mary's eight.

The match came down to the fifth set and Marymount erased a 9-6 deficit with a 9-2 run to post a 15-11 win in the set and 3-2 victory for the match.

Sophomore captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) contributed her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs while sophomore Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) added 11.5 points on eight kills and seven block assists. First-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) also notched double-digit digs with 13.

Four Saints tallied double-digit kills with first-year outside hitter Emileigh Rettig (Alexandria, Va.) leading the way with a double-double of 18 kills and 17 digs. Senior setter Brianne Fitzpatrick (West Islip, N.Y.) also had a double-double with 55 assists and 13 digs.

St. Mary's wraps up the regular-season on Saturday, November 2 as they travel to Frostburg State University for a tri-match with Frostburg State and Hollins University. The Seahawks play Frostburg first in a CAC match at noon followed by Hollins at 2:00 pm.
