Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior captain Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) scored twice as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team finished in a 2-2 draw with Capital Athletic Conference newcomer, Southern Virginia University, on Saturday.
Even though Southern Virginia (3-5-1) is playing a full CAC schedule in 2013, its matches will not count in the conference standings and the Knights will not be eligible for the league playoffs until the 2014 season.
The first half went scoreless despite St. Mary's (2-7-3) posting an 8-2 shot advantage as only two shots were on target and junior goalkeeper MaKenzie Cox (Alpine, Utah/Lone Peak) handled those without incident.
Both sides unleashed their offensive power in the final 45 minutes. Southern Virginia struck first just 31 seconds into the second half as first-year forward Tatiana Monsen (Orem, Utah/Orem) dribbled in alone and finished into the lower left corner.
Latour tallied her first score of the afternoon at 53:30 as she collected a long pass from sophomore defender Maria Bertoni (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) and ripped a shot over Cox's head from 25 yards out.
With the end of regulation fast approaching, the Knights staked another one-goal lead at 82:46 as Monsen gave senior midfielder Meagen Varney (Loganville, Ga./S. Gwinnett) a short pass and Varney sent it over the head of first-year Sara Eaton (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School). But less than four minutes later, Latour struck again as she fired another long-distance shot over the head of Cox to force OT.
The Seahawks dominated Southern Virginia with a 7-1 shot margin and three corner kicks but were unable to put anything past Cox, who made four saves in the extra 20 minutes.
Eaton tallied four saves for St. Mary's while Cox came up with eight. The Seahawks owned a 23-16 shot advantage for the game while posting a 9-5 edge in corners.
St. Mary's will look to keep the momentum going on Wednesday, October 9th when the Seahawks welcome Frostburg State University to Seahawk Stadium for a conference tilt at 3:30 pm.
