Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team saw their seven-game win streak come to a halt Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks opened up Capital Athletic Conference action with a 2-0 loss at the hands of No. 10 Christopher Newport University.

Christopher Newport (12-0, 2-0 CAC), who is in its first year of being a CAC member, used two goals in the first half to keep its overall and conference records unblemished.

The Captains' first goal came at 10:11 as junior forward Belle Tunstall (Vienna, Va./James Madison) inserted the ball during the penalty corner up to senior forward Jordan Snider (Newport News, Va./Menchville) who scooped the ball over junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop's (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) head for the 1-0 CNU lead.

Senior midfielder Hilary St. Mary (Yorktown, Va./York) notched her first goal of the season at 29:23 as St. Mary deflected senior defender Shelby Judkins' (Hampton, Va./Bethel) pass at the left post.

CNU outshot the Seahawks (7-3, 0-1 CAC), 16-1, and posted a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Bishop finished the contest with four saves for St. Mary's while sophomore defender Emily Smithers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) added a defensive save. First-year Bailey Lien (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) collected her fourth shutout win of the season with a save in the second half.

The Seahawks will be back in action next Saturday, October 12th when St. Mary's welcomes Kean University to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference game at noon.
