Seahawk Women's Soccer Bows Out of CAC Tournament

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The hope of winning the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament title was cut short Saturday afternoon as third-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland dropped a 1-0 decision to sixth-seeded University of Mary Washington in first round action.

This is the second straight season that the two teams have met in the conference tournament first round and for the second year in a row, Mary Washington (10-9) has kept the Seahawks from advancing further.

The loss brings St. Mary's campaign to a close with a 7-9-3 (6-2 CAC) overall record. The Seahawks overcame a lot of adversity and injuries this season to post a program-best six conference wins for only the third time in program history.

Mary Washington needed only an early first half goal to advance to Wednesday's semifinal contest at second-seeded York College of Pennsylvania. With today's win, the Eagles not only advance to the semifinals but avenged their 1-0 overtime loss to St. Mary's during the regular season on September 28.

Sophomore midfielder Lizzie Weast (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) gave UMW the 1-0 lead that they would never relinquish at 8:15 as Weast put away a loose ball in the box into the top right corner.

Mary Washington edged the Seahawks in shots, 9-7, and posted a 5-0 corner kick margin.

Both goalkeepers – Seahawk senior captain Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) and UMW first-year Sara Armor (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) – each recorded three saves while Armor recorded her first shutout of the season.
