Box Score 2 Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team locked up the fifth seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament as the Seahawks swept a tri-match hosted by Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's (18-9, 3-5 CAC) needed a win over Frostburg State and a little luck in the coin flip to make this year's playoffs and the Seahawks got both today. They handed Frostburg (7-26, 3-5 CAC) a 3-0 setback and York College of Pennsylvania (16-15, 3-5 CAC) lost to Salisbury University, forcing a three-way and the need for a coin flip.
York was the odd team out, giving St. Mary's the No. 5 seed and the Bobcats the sixth seed as the Seahawks owned the head-to-head tiebreaker over FSU. St. Mary's will travel to Arlington, Virginia on Tuesday, November 5th to face fourth-seeded Marymount (Va.) University in a first-round match at 7:00 pm.
Following their sweep of Frostburg State, the Seahawks ended the tri-match with a 3-0 win over Hollins University (5-25).
St. Mary's posted scores of 25-12, 25-21, 25-12 in defeating Frostburg for its third conference win of the season. Sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) was the only Seahawk to notch double-digit kills as Goodspeed put down a match-high 14 and collected three total blocks. First-year setter Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) assisted the balanced SMCM attack with 37 helpers.
The defense was led by first-year libero Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) and sophomore defensive specialist Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) as Hill posted 20 digs and Johnson added 10.
With set scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-21, the Seahawks defeated Hollins for the second time this season as St. Mary's had earned a 3-0 win at Hollins on September 7th. Goodspeed paced the team with a career-best 20 kills while Graf registered her 11th double-double of 2013 with 38 assists and 11 digs.
Sophomore captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) contributed 15 kills while sophomore setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added seven digs and served up a season-best four aces. Hill tallied 23 digs as the Seahawk defense held Hollins to a hitting percentage of .130.
