Box Score Owings Mills, Md. – Four Seahawks scored in double digits as the No. 10 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team dropped a close 84-78 decision to No. 19 Cabrini College Friday night at the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic hosted by Stevenson University. The game was tied eight times and featured seven lead changes with the game being decided in the final 11 minutes of the contest.
Senior captain Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) finished a jumper at 10:27 to knot the game at 60-60, capping a 16-6 run over a seven-minute span that helped the Seahawks erase a 10-point deficit. First-year forward Deryl Bagwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) knocked down a three to return a three-point lead to Cabrini before a quick 9-0 run had St. Mary's ahead 69-63 with 7:50 remaining in the game.
The Cavaliers (2-0) reclaimed the lead with a short run of their own over the next three minutes to own a 76-69 advantage. St. Mary's worked to come within 76-74 on a three-point play by McFall with 3:06 left in regulation. The Seahawks would get no closer as Cabrini stretched its lead to eight with 27 seconds on the clock, outscoring St. Mary's by an 8-4 margin in the final three minutes.
McFall paced St. Mary's scoring quartet with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting while finishing the game as the team's leading rebounder with a season-best six boards. Fellow senior captain Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air) contributed 14 points and five caroms while junior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) added a dozen points and season-high five assists.
Senior guard Christopher Hutchinson (Baltimore, Md./New Town) also chipped in 12 points for the Seahawks as Hutchinson came off the bench.
St. Mary's (1-1) was down 43-37 at halftime despite shooting nearly 54% (14-of-26) to Cabrini's 43%. The Seahawks' biggest lead of the game was a six-point margin at 15:43 and 12:14 of the first half following three-pointers by LaGuerre and McFall. Cabrini erased its first-half deficit with a 13-2 run over a nearly four-minute long span en route to its six-point lead.
Cabrini's senior forward Fran Rafferty (King of Prussia, Pa.) led all players at intermission with 16 points while junior guard Aaron Walton-Moss (Camden, N.J.) tallied 10 points and nine rebounds. McFall paced the Seahawks in the first half with 11 points, four boards, and two blocks.
Walton-Moss finished the night with a double-double on game-highs of 24 points and 16 caroms as the Cavaliers owned a 41-27 rebounding margin. Rafferty was held to five second-half points as he ended up with 21.
The Seahawks will look to get back in the win column on Sunday, November 24 as St. Mary's continues its play at the Hoopsville Classic, facing No. 18 Middlebury College at 1:00 pm.
