Career-Highs Pace St. Mary's Women's Basketball at No. 24 Randolph-Macon

Box Score

Ashland, Va. – The senior trio of Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel), Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie), and Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) collected career-highs as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team headed into the Thanksgiving break with a 102-86 loss to No. 24 Randolph-Macon College Tuesday night.

The Seahawks (0-4) notched a season-high 86 points in tonight's non-conference action and became only the third team this season to drop 80-plus points on Randolph-Macon (6-0). St. Mary's and fellow Capital Athletic Conference member, No. 15 Christopher Newport University, are tied for having scored the most points against the Yellow Jacket defense.

Pearson recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds while adding a season-best three steals. Lewis also notched 20-plus points as she contributed a career-best 24 points and season-high nine boards while Pruden added 15 points and a career-high 16 caroms.

The trio's combined effort of 39 rebounds allowed the Seahawks to post a 60-50 rebounding edge for the game, including a 29-13 margin in offensive boards.

St. Mary's stepped off the bus ready to play as the Seahawks surprised nationally-ranked R-MC by opening up the game on a 15-3 run for their biggest lead of the game. Eight straight points by sophomore forward Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va.) helped to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the contest – 28-24 at 7:39. Randolph-Macon maintained its lead and headed into the locker room with a 41-34 edge.

Pearson paced the Seahawks at halftime with 13 points and eight rebounds. As a team, St. Mary's shot 28.2% (11-of-39) from the field and 12-of-17 (70.6%) from the free throw line. Junior transfer Taylor Huber (Ashland, Va.) led R-MC with 15 points as the Yellow Jackets shot 43.8% (14-of-32) from the floor and 52.9% (9-of-17) from the charity stripe.

Improved shooting allowed the Seahawks to outscore Randolph-Macon, 18-12, in the first five minutes of the second half, erasing a nine-point deficit to pull within 53-52 at 14:49 on senior guard Aura Payne's (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) layup. A three-point play by Pearson kept it at a one-point gap at 13:10 before the Yellow Jackets went on a 24-14 run to boast an 11-point lead (80-69) at 7:55. R-MC maintained its double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.

Huber finished the night with a game-high 28 points for the Yellow Jackets as she highlighted a quartet of Yellow Jackets who scored in double figures. Anderson collected a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

The Seahawks will take a couple of days off to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday before opening up conference action at Salisbury University on Wednesday, December 4 at 5:30 pm. This will be St. Mary's second in a six-game road trip.
