Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – Three Seahawks scored in double figures for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team as they dropped a 69-52 Capital Athletic Conference decision at the University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon.
Senior forward Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) led the way for St. Mary's (1-6, 1-2 CAC) with a game-high 18 points while senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and junior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) each tallied 10 points.
The Seahawks kept pace with Mary Washington (5-2, 2-1 CAC) on the glass as the Eagles only posted a 40-37 edge in rebounding. Senior forward Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) hauled in a game-best 11 boards, including nine caroms on the defensive end, while Pruden contributed eight rebounds.
St. Mary's stayed on the Eagles' heels for the first 10 minutes of the game, knotting the game twice at 11:32 on a jumper by sophomore guard Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends School) and at 9:59 on a Pruden layup. Following that final draw, Mary Washington went on a 14-4 run to own a 30-20 lead at 4:17 and rolled to a 40-25 halftime advantage.
Senior forward Aby Diop (Springfield, Va.) paced all players with nine points while Pruden and first-year center Brianne Comden (Fredericksburg, Va.) each had eight at intermission. Mary Washington shot 54.5% (18-of-33) from the field while the Seahawks made 40.0% (8-of-20) of their shots.
The Eagles only outscored St. Mary's, 29-27, in the second half. Twenty-four Seahawk miscues helped Mary Washington to their 17-point victory as the Eagles notched 29 points off those turnovers.
Senior guard Sam Partonen (Burke, Va.) finished as UMW's leading scorer with 13 points, eight assists, and five steals while Diop was held to one point in the second half and came up with 10.
The six-game road trip wraps up for the Seahawks in the Caribbean at the Puerto Rico Division III Classic on December 21-22. St. Mary's will face the University of Sacred Heart on the 21st at 5:00 pm before taking on Alvernia University the next day at 1:00 pm.
