Box Score San Juan, P.R. – Four of five starters scored in double figures as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team notched their second consecutive win with a convincing 70-45 non-conference win over Alvernia University Sunday afternoon in the Puerto Rico Division III Classic.
Senior Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) led the Seahawks (3-6) for the second time in as many games as Pearson tallied a game-best 17 points while junior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) collected her first career double-double with 15 points and a career-best 10 boards.
Senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) joined in the scoring with 14 points while senior Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) chipped in her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 10 caroms.
With Vagnoni and Pruden notching double-double rebounds, St. Mary's dominated the glass with a dominating 51-19 rebounding margin. The Seahawks shot 46.4% (26-56) from the floor for the game, including 5-of-12 (41.7%) from downtown. St. Mary's was extremely accurate at the free throw line, shooting a season-best 81.3% (13-of-16).
Vagnoni helped the Seahawks to a 30-24 halftime advantage with nine points and six boards. The Alvernia Crusaders (4-5) were paced by first-year guard Jenna Wolff's (Newark, Del.) seven points off the bench in the first 20 minutes.
The Seahawks used a 32-8 run over the first 15 minutes of the second half to pull away from Alvernia and extend their eight-point lead to 62-36. While St. Mary's shot an impressive 57.1% (16-of-28) from the field, the Crusaders struggled to make their shots, posting a 23.1-field goal percentage, including going 1-of-10 from behind the arc.
First-year center Tyra Roberts (Bensalem, Pa.) was the only Alvernia player in double figures with 10 points while Wolff finished with nine points.
The Seahawks will be back on the hardwood in the New Year as St. Mary's welcomes Marymount (Va.) University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena on Saturday, January 4th for a Capital Athletic Conference match-up at 2:00 pm.
