Box Score San Juan, P.R. – The No. 23 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team finished undefeated at the Puerto Rico Division III Classic Sunday afternoon with a 61-56 non-conference victory over Universidad del Sagrado Corazon.
Senior captain Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air) led the Seahawks (7-3) to the win with game-bests of 17 points, six rebounds, and two assists while sophomore forward Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) tallied 14 points, a game-high six boards, and a career-best two blocks. For the second consecutive game, senior forward Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) scored in double digits with 10 points and a game-best six caroms.
St. Mary's controlled the game's tempo from start to finish as the Seahawks never trailed in the game. The team's biggest lead of the game was 20-9 with 12:13 remaining in the first half. St. Mary's held a 29-25 advantage at halftime as Sagrado Corazon used a 16-9 run to close the gap which was capped by David Rivera's three-pointer at 1:28.
Rivera attempted another three-pointer in the last 31 seconds of the first half but was blocked by senior guard Christopher Hutchinson (Baltimore, Md./New Town) to preserve the Seahawks' four-point lead. Hill netted 13 of his 17 points in the first half while Alejandro Grant paced the Delfins with six points off the bench.
The Seahawks outscored Sagrado Corazon 17-12 in the first five minutes of the second half to build a nine-point lead behind six points from Spurrier and five from McFall. The Delfins cut the lead to two three times, including coming within 58-56 at 2:10 on Jorge Melendez's layup. However, Sagrado Corazon turned the ball over in its last two possessions and St. Mary's notched the win.
Grant finished as the Delfins' scoring leader with 16 points as a reserve, adding three steals as well, while Steven Quiroz chipped in eight points and three rebounds.
The Seahawks will be back in action in the New Year as St. Mary's hosts Marymount (Va.) University on Saturday, January 4th at 4:00 p.m. in Capital Athletic Conference action.
