Seahawk Women's Basketball Opens Up CAC Action at Salisbury

Salisbury, Md. – Senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and junior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) paced the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team in the Seahawks' Capital Athletic Conference opener at Salisbury University Wednesday night.

St. Mary's (0-5, 0-1 CAC) remains winless on the season as the Seahawks dropped a 70-52 decision to Salisbury. Lewis and Vagnoni each put up 10 points while senior forward Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) contributed nine followed by senior forward Marché Pearson's (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) eight points.

The Seahawks twice tied the game in the first 20 minutes but were unable to gain the lead. St. Mary's cut down an 8-2 deficit at 16:07 with a 14-9 run over an 8:37 span to pull within one as Lewis made one of two at the line. The Sea Gulls closed out the half on an 18-4 run to own a 15-point advantage at halftime.

St. Mary's was limited by poor shooting in the first half as the Seahawks shot a dismal 26.9% (7-of-26) from the field, including 1-of-5 from downtown. Salisbury (4-2, 1-0 CAC) posted a 35-20 halftime advantage as the Sea Gulls shot 41.7% (15-of-36) from the floor. Junior guard Anna Hackett (Germantown, Md.) led SU at intermission with nine points.

Salisbury maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second stanza, holding its biggest lead of 65-39 at 4:49. The Seahawks ended the game on a 13-5 for the 70-52 final.

Senior guard Aura Payne (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) kept St. Mary's competitive on the boards with a game- and season-best six rebounds while Lewis and Pearson each added five. Senior Bridget Wilkins (Washington, D.C./Washington Waldorf School) chipped in season-highs of seven points and four caroms.

Junior guard Courtney McManus (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied 15 points to lead Salisbury in its first CAC win of the season while Hackett finished with 13 points and nine assists.

The six-game road trip continues for the Seahawks as St. Mary's travels to conference newcomer Penn State Harrisburg in Middletown, Pennsylvania on Saturday, December 7th for a CAC contest at 1:00 pm.
