Box Score Doylestown, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team posted a 2-0 lead in their season-opening game at Delaware Valley College Friday afternoon but the Aggies rallied for a 3-2 overtime victory.
Junior forward Jessica Summers (Drexel Hill, Pa.) completed Delaware Valley's (1-0) comeback as Summers took a pass in the middle from sophomore forward Taylor Prichett (Southampton, Pa.) and put her shot into the left corner from 12 yards out nearly five minutes (74:51) into the extra period.
Junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) collected a career-best 14 saves for the Seahawks (0-1) as DelVal doubled up St. Mary's on shots by a 22-11 margin and posted a 16-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore forward Emily Bishop (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) put St. Mary's on the board early on in the contest as Bishop connected on a pass from fellow classmate Ally Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) for the 1-0 lead at 2:57. The Aggies found themselves down 1-0 at halftime despite boasting advantages in shots (10-2) and corners (9-3).
First-year Carly Todd (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield) had a hand in giving the Seahawks a 2-0 lead at 50:30 as Todd sent a pass across the circle for her first collegiate assist and junior captain Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) capitalized for her first goal of the season.
DelVal finally broke through a minute and 10 seconds later as senior forward Leah Hawthorn (Camp Hill, Pa.) scored off one of the Aggies' four corners in the second half. Prichett picked up the game-tying goal at 58:16 as she tapped in a cross from Summers.
Senior Sandra Edwards (Hampton, N.J.) finished the game with seven saves in her team's season-opening win.
The Seahawks will have a week to regroup before traveling to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania to play in the Bryn Mawr College Tournament on September 7 and 8. St. Mary's will take on Drew University at 1:30 pm on the 7th.
