Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Ashland, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team posted a 1-1 record in their season-opening weekend under the direction of first-year head coach Rose Burke Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks swept N.C. Wesleyan College (0-2) for their first win of 2013 before dropping a 3-0 decision to host Randolph-Macon College (2-0).

St. Mary's notched set scores of 25-21, 26-24, 25-9 in its season-opening victory over the Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan behind standout performances by sophomores Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck).

Goodspeed collected match-bests of 13 kills, a .632 hitting percentage and three block assists while Vaillant recorded her first career double-double on career-highs of 12 kills and 11 digs. The offense was set up by the efforts of setters Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Mimi Graf (Broadneck HS) as the duo combined for 40 assists.

Graf notched a double-double on 18 assists and a match-high 14 digs in her collegiate debut plus added five kills and one ace. Chao dished 22 assists, just one shy of her career-best, and contributed six digs and a match-best three aces.

Sophomore captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and first-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) helped out defensively with 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Fisher also picked up six kills, an assist and an ace.

The Seahawks struggled to get anything going on attack against Randolph-Macon, who received votes in the votes in the AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll, and fell 25-10, 25-10, 25-12 to the Yellow Jackets. As a team, St. Mary's generated only 18 kills and one ace.

Senior captain Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) paced the team against R-MC with eight kills while Vaillant added eight digs and three block assists.

St. Mary's will be back in action next weekend at the Hollins University Green Invitational in Roanoke, Virginia on September 6-7. On the 6th, the Seahawks will open up action against Methodist University at 5:00 pm followed by a match against Virginia Intermont College at 7:00 pm.
