Box Score 2 Gettysburg, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team notched two more victories Saturday afternoon, starting with a sweep of Hood College before tallying a 3-1 win over the host Gettysburg College Bullets.
The Seahawks (7-1) now own a 21-4 record in 25 sets played thus far. The set dropped by St. Mary's today to Gettysburg was the first one since a 3-0 setback at Randolph-Macon College on August 31.
St. Mary's is off to its best start since 2007 when the Seahawks posted a 7-1 record in their first eight matches and went on to finish with a single-season record 30 wins. In 2008, the program also collected a 7-1 mark in its first eight contests en route a 27-7 overall record.
The team notched set scores of 25-17, 25-11, 25-16 in its victory over Hood (2-5) as senior captain Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) led the way with a match- and season-best 11 kills. As a team, the Seahawks posted a season-best .405 hitting percentage, making only seven errors in 74 attempts. Sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) boosted the team's attack with an .889 hitting percentage (8 kills, no errors, 9 attempts).
Setters Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each tallied nine assists while Graf added a match-best 12 digs. Sophomore Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) collected a match-best three aces while Goodspeed added three solo blocks.
The Seahawks dropped the first set to Gettysburg (6-5), 21-25, before rallying back with set scores of 25-20, 25-17, 25-14. Four Seahawks finished with double-digit kills as sophomore captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) matched her career-high with 14. Goodspeed and Graf each had 11 while Klima added 10.
Chao dished out a career-best 24 assists to keep the offense moving while contributing to the scoring with four aces. Graf matched her season-high with 21 helpers.
First-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) was on the ball defensively with a match- and season-high 24 digs while scoring points with six aces. Goodspeed picked up a season-best five block assists in the team's seventh win of the season.
Riding a six-match win streak, St. Mary's will continue its road trip, heading to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania to take on Messiah College in non-conference action at 3:00 pm.
