Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team picked up their third straight win with an exciting 2-1 non-conference win over former Capital Athletic Conference foe, Stevenson University, Saturday afternoon.
Junior captain Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) lifted the Seahawks (3-2) to the victory at 59:05 as Edwards collected a pass from first-year forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and found the back of the cage for her second goal of the season.
St. Mary's took 21 shots (13 on goal) to the Mustangs' 11 attempts (5 on goal) while the Seahawks posted a 10-8 margin in penalty corners. The home team owned a 12-3 shot advantage over the final 35 minutes. St. Mary's is now 16-4-1 against Stevenson, winning 13 straight. The last four meetings have been one-goal victories for the Seahawks.
Junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) made four stops while first-year Gabriella Brooks (Bel Air, Md./Patterson Mill) and sophomore Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) combined for 11 stops, including Cavanaugh's seven stops in the second half.
The game was tied 1-1 at halftime as Stevenson (5-4) struck first at 19:29 behind sophomore midfielder Rebecca Moreland's (Parkville, Md./Mercy) first score of the year. Senior captain Claire Kortyna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) evened up the contest at 34:40 with her second tally of the season.
St. Mary's will be back in action tomorrow at 12:30 pm, hosting Washington & Lee University at Seahawk Stadium.
