Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team notched its third consecutive one-goal victory Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 non-conference win over Washington & Lee University, marking the Seahawks' fourth win in a row.
First-year forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) secured the win for St. Mary's (4-2) in the 44th minute as Wolf scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season at 43:18 off an assist by junior captain Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand).
Today's win marks the first time that the Seahawks have defeated Washington & Lee (1-7) as the Generals had won the previous five meetings.
St. Mary's posted a 13-5 shot advantage, dominating the first half by a 10-3 margin. The Seahawks controlled penalty corners as well with an 11-7 edge.
Junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) made three stops while sophomores Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) and Sally Curtiss (Morristown, N.J./Madison) split time in goal and combined for five saves, including Axelrod's four stops in the first half.
The game was tied 1-1 at halftime as senior captain Claire Kortyna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) put St. Mary's on the board first at 20:18, collecting a pass from sophomore Emily Smithers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) and finding the back of the cage for her third of the season.
Washington & Lee avoided the shutout at 26:42 when junior midfielder Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) converted on a penalty stroke to even up the contest just before intermission.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Thursday, September 26 when the Seahawks welcome Randolph-Macon College to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference game at 4:00 pm.
