Box Score Towson, Md. – Sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) tallied a career- and match-best 20 kills in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team back into the win column with a 3-1 non-conference victory over the host Goucher College Gophers Tuesday night.
Joining Goodspeed with double-digit kills was sophomore captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) as Fisher added 11. Fisher finished the night with her second consecutive double-double as she chipped in a dozen digs as well. Four Seahawks recorded double-figure digs as first-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) paced the foursome with a match-best 23 digs.
St. Mary's had to overcome an early 4-0 deficit in the first set, tying the game twice before using a 5-3 run to gain its first lead of the set at 17-15. The Seahawks never relinquished the lead as Goodspeed and Fisher each tallied four kills in leading the team to a 25-23 win in the first set.
The Gophers rebounded in the second set with a 25-21 victory to even up the match 1-1 as Goucher used a 4-0 run to erase the Seahawks' 2-0 start and take the lead for good. The defense held St. Mary's to just five kills and forced 10 errors for a -.122 hitting percentage.
A 7-1 run to start the third set propelled the Seahawks to a 25-12 win and 2-1 advantage in the match. Goodspeed threw down six of the team's 13 kills in the game as St. Mary's made only two errors to hit a match-best .423.
St. Mary's sealed the match win with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth set as the Seahawks collected a match-best 20 kills. Goucher notched the first point of the set before back-to-back Goodspeed kills gave the lead to the team and St. Mary's built an insurmountable 19-11 advantage.
First-year setter Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) registered her fifth double-double of the season with 25 assists and 16 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) contributed to the win with 14 digs.
The Seahawks will be back in action this weekend as St. Mary's competes in the 20th Annual Lycoming College Warrior Tip-Off Classic. Action starts Friday, September 27 with matches against Ithaca College at 6:00 pm and Misericordia University at 8:00 pm.
