Seahawk Volleyball Picks Up Two Wins at Lycoming

Williamsport, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team stayed on the winning track as the Seahawks (10-2) opened up action at the 20th Annual Lycoming College Warrior Tip-Off Classic with a pair of victories Friday night. St. Mary's posted triumphs over Ithaca College, 3-1, and Misericordia University, 3-0.

The Seahawks dropped the first set against Ithaca (6-11), 25-22, before responding with set wins of 25-12, 25-16, 25-19. Sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) paced the team in the win with 14 kills and four total blocks (2 solo).

St. Mary's hitting percentage of .254 for the match was supported by sophomores Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) with their double-digit kill efforts. Fisher tallied 12 kills and a .323 hitting percentage while Vaillant added 10 at a .500 clip.

Setters Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Elaina Straub (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) combined for 38 assists to keep the offense rolling. Defensively, first-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) led three Seahawks in double-digit digs with 17 while Fisher notched her third double-double with 10 digs.

The Seahawks swept the Misericordia Cougars (6-8) with set scores of 25-17, 26-24, 25-16. The defense held the Cougars to single-digit kills as St. Mary's combined for 13 solo blocks and served up eight aces.

Fisher and Goodspeed each had 10 kills while Goodspeed recorded four solo blocks and three block assists. Hill once again put forth a solid defensive effort with 19 digs but contributed to the attack with five aces.

Graf finished the night with her sixth double-double of the season behind 16 assists and 13 digs. After 16 digs against Ithaca, sophomore defensive specialist Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) continued her strong defensive play with 15 in the win over Misericordia.

The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow as St. Mary's wraps up action at the Lycoming Warrior Tip-Off Classic. They will face host Lycoming at 10:00 am before taking on Elmira College at noon.
