Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team opened up Capital Athletic Conference action in grand fashion Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks (2-5-2, 1-0 CAC) notched a 1-0 overtime win over the University of Mary Washington Eagles.
Sophomore forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) lifted St. Mary's to the win over Mary Washington (4-5, 0-1 CAC) as Sawyer put away her third goal of the season just 1:31 into overtime. Sawyer collected a pass from junior midfielder Lexy McCarty (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) at the lower left corner of the box and took a few dribbles before firing into the lower right corner.
Today's victory is only the fifth win all-time against Mary Washington and just the third triumph that St. Mary's has tallied at home in the 27-year history of the series.
Mary Washington (4-5, 0-1 CAC) outshot the Seahawks 21-8 (8-6 in shots on goal) but St. Mary's brought the pressure when it counted the most, posting a 2-0 shot margin in OT. The Eagles also earned a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
First-year goalkeeper Sara Eaton (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) recorded eight saves in her first career shutout win while junior Alyssa Goodwin (Haymarket, Va./Haymarket) made five for the Eagles.
St. Mary's will be back on the pitch tomorrow when the Seahawks welcome former CAC foe, Stevenson University, to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference match at 4:00 pm.
