Box Score 2 Roanoke, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team opened up play at the Hollins University Green Invitational Friday night with a pair of sweeps over Methodist University (2-3) and Virginia Intermont College (0-3).
St. Mary's (3-1) notched set scores of 26-24, 25-14, 25-21 in its victory over the Methodist Monarchs behind a balanced attack. Sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and senior captain Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) combined for 13 kills while sophomore defensive specialist Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) led the defensive effort with a career-high 13 digs.
Goodspeed also matched her career-best of five block solos while adding one block assist. Sophomore captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) contributed to the win with a personal-best three service aces while first-year setter Mimi Graf (Broadneck HS) dished out a match-best 18 assists.
In their win over the Virginia Intermont Cobras, the Seahawks posted set scores of 25-19, 26-24, 25-22 as Fisher collected a match- and career-high 14 kills while adding nine digs. Goodspeed also had a double-digit offensive effort with a dozen kills.
Goodspeed continued her strong play at the net with 5.0 total blocks (4 solos, 1 assist) while first-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) picked up a season-best 20 digs and Johnson added a dozen. Graf (21 assists) and sophomore Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) combined for 32 assists in helping St. Mary's to a .262 hitting percentage for the match, including a match-best 40% in the first set.
St. Mary's will wrap up action tomorrow at the Hollins Green Invitational, facing host Hollins at 10:30 a.m. and Emory & Henry College at 12:30 pm.
