Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team dropped their opening game at their own Seahawk Classic, falling 4-1 to Bridgewater (Va.) College Saturday afternoon.
Bridgewater (2-1), the defending Seahawk Classic champion, scored twice in each half for its second win of the season. Sophomore Ethan McBryde (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) paced the Eagles with a goal and an assist, including netting the game-winner.
Bridgewater will take on Salisbury University, who is ranked seventh in the South Atlantic region, tomorrow at 1:00 pm while St. Mary's (1-2) will face Shenandoah University at 3:00 pm in the final of the Seahawk Classic. Salisbury posted an 8-0 shutout of Shenandoah in today's other game.
The Eagles struck twice within a two-minute period in the first half as senior Sawyer Janes (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) and McBryde found the back of the net in the 16th and 18th minutes, respectively. The Seahawks kept Bridgewater scoreless for the remainder of the half, heading into halftime down two.
Sophomore Adam Weisenborn (Barboursville, Va./William Monroe) gave BC a three-goal lead at 51:11, chipping the ball over senior captain Austin Brown's (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) head after receiving a pass inside the box from McBryde.
The Seahawks avoided the shutout in the 83rd minute when senior captain Chris Adams (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) put back a loose ball right in front of the goal.
Senior midfielder Alec Utter (Centreville, Va./Westfield) added Bridgewater's final goal at 87:51, finishing off a pass from first-year forward Max Chacon (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge).
The Eagles posted a 24-11 shot advantage while St. Mary's edged the visitors, 4-3 in corner kicks.
Brown finished with a season-best eight saves for the Seahawks while first-year Mark Davis (Henrico, Va./Henrico) made four stops in the Bridgewater win.
