Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team opened up action at the Bryn Mawr College Tournament with a 2-0 loss to Drew University Saturday afternoon despite a career effort by junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg).
Bishop posted a career-high 15 saves but it wasn't enough to fend off a goal in each half by the Drew Rangers (3-0). Helping out the Seahawk defensive front were junior Daniella Hanacek (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) and sophomore Ally Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) as they each picked up a defensive save.
The Seahawks (0-2) will look to record their first win of the season tomorrow when they face Cedar Crest College in the tournament's consolation game at 11:00 am. Cedar Crest suffered a 9-1 loss at the hands of host Bryn Mawr.
Drew posted an 8-0 shot advantage and 5-0 penalty corner edge in the first half as the Rangers owned a 1-0 halftime lead behind senior forward Brooke Gagliano's (Freehold, N.J.) tally at 9:49.
The Seahawks held strong defensively as the Rangers pelted them with 15 second half shots and earned nine corners, holding them scoreless until the game's final eight-and-a-half minutes. Junior midfielder Melissa Boyd (Hellertown, Pa.) added an insurance goal at 61:35.
Sophomore Emily Smithers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) and first-year Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) tested Drew's senior keeper CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H.) with a shot apiece.
Drew finished the game with a 23-2 lead in shots and a 14-2 margin in corners while Carlini made two stops for the team's second shutout win of the season.
