Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team put an end to their two-game skid with a 2-0 shutout victory over Shenandoah University on the final day of the Seahawk Classic Sunday afternoon.
St. Mary's (2-2) did all of its scoring in the second half using the DeMatha Catholic High School connection as junior forward Matt Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) and sophomore Will Alberding (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) both found the back of the net for the Seahawks.
Salisbury University, who is ranked seventh in the South Atlantic region, was crowned the Seahawk Classic champion after posting a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater (Va.) College. Salisbury's first-year defender Kevin Miller (Barrington, N.J.) was named the MVP as Miller tallied two assists in yesterday's 8-0 win over Shenandoah and scored the game-winner in today's win.
St. Mary's will be back in action this Saturday, September 14th when the Seahawks travel to North Carolina to take on Greensboro College in non-conference action at 4:00 pm.
Following a scoreless first half, Braun finally broke through for St. Mary's in the 74th minute as he put back his own rebound for his first goal of the season.
The Seahawks added an insurance tally at 82:30 as Alberding connected with first-year forward Matthew Yurich (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) for his first tally of the season. Yurich controlled a loose rebound inside the box and left it for Alberding to finish.
St. Mary's posted a 27-8 shot advantage while corner kicks were even at four apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Nate Ramsland (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) notched his second shutout of the season with three stops while first-year Rodrigo Casteriana (Stephens city, Va./Sherando) made three saves for Shenandoah (0-4).
