Seahawk Women's Basketball Stumbles against Salisbury

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team wrapped up their Capital Athletic Conference series with Salisbury University Thursday night, falling 65-40 to the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury (11-7, 7-3 CAC) swept the season series after claiming the December 4th matchup on the Eastern Shore by a 70-52 decision. The win maintains the Sea Gulls in fourth in the conference standings while St. Mary's (6-11, 3-7 CAC) is still holding on to the sixth spot with seven games left in the regular season.

Senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) paced the Seahawks with 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists while senior Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) led the team's rebounding efforts with a game-best 10 boards and added seven points.

Salisbury quickly distanced themselves from the Seahawks and never looked back. The Sea Gulls opened up with an 8-2 run in the first three-and-a-half-minutes before stretching that advantage to 27-7 at 10:43 on a pair of free throws by junior guard Sarah Seipp (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg). Salisbury went on to cruise to a 38-17 halftime advantage.

The Sea Gulls' junior guard Anna Hackett (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) led all scorers with 13 points while Pruden paced St. Mary's with seven points and four caroms at intermission. Salisbury shot 38.2% (13-of-34) from the floor to the Seahawks' 26.1% (6-of-24).

Though Salisbury only outscored the Seahawks, 27-23, in the second half, the hole dug by St. Mary's in the first half was too deep to climb out of.

Seipp finished as the Sea Gulls' leading scorer with game-highs of 17 points and four steals while Hackett ended the game with her 13 first-half points as well as a game-best seven assists.

The Seahawks will look to rebound this Saturday, February 1st as St. Mary's continues their four-game home stand, taking on CAC newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg, in its third straight home game. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Seahawks will also be holding their annual Play 4Kay (Pink Day) event on Saturday in support of breast cancer awareness.
