Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The No. 25 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team erased a 15-point second-half deficit but the Seahawks' comeback attempt fell four points shy as Salisbury University held on for the 65-62 Capital Athletic Conference victory Thursday night.
St. Mary's (13-5, 7-3 CAC) utilized a 28-13 run over a 10-minute span to knot the contest, 54-54, at 8:25 following an old-fashioned three-point play by senior captain Kyle Wise (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College). The Sea Gulls (8-10, 4-6 CAC) responded with a quick 7-2 spurt to re-establish a 61-56 advantage with 5:11 left.
Junior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) drained a three-pointer at 3:52 to cut the SU lead to one while senior captain Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air) made good on a jumper with 41 seconds on the clock to keep the gap at one.
Senior guard Tim Harwood (Rockville, Md./Magruder) sealed the win by knocking down a pair of free throws with 4.7 ticks remaining. As time expired, Hill's three-point attempt hit the back iron and fell wide of the basket.
Tonight's loss marks just the second time in the last six seasons (including 2013-14) that the Seahawks have recorded three conference losses. The last time was the 2011-12 season when St. Mary's posted a 13-3 CAC mark.
It is also the first time since the 2007-08 campaign that the Seahawks have lost more than two games at home as St. Mary's currently owns a 3-3 record at home. In 2007-08, the team finished with a 7-5 mark at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
Wise paced the Seahawks with season-bests of 17 points and three steals while Hill ended with 13 points, two rebounds, and two assists. LaGuerre also scored in double-digits, contributing 11 points, six boards, and two helpers.
Three-pointers by LaGuerre and senior captain Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) gave St. Mary's its biggest lead of 22-18 at 8:51; however, Salisbury closed out the first half on an 18-2 run to boast a 36-12 halftime advantage.
Senior forward Dominic Milburn (Silver Spring, Md./Montrose Christian) poured in a game-high 23 points, including 14 in the first half, as Milburn was the only Sea Gull to score in double digits.
St. Mary's continues its home stand this Saturday, February 1st when the Seahawks welcome CAC newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg, to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a CAC tilt at 4:00 p.m. There will be a special recognition for the 2013 Seahawk men's lacrosse team at halftime, honoring them for their CAC championship title and first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
