Box Score

Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team rebounded from Saturday's CAC-opening loss with a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference win at University of Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon. Junior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) scored both goals to lead the Seahawks to the win.

Today's contest was the 37th meeting between the two sides since the series began in 1986. Despite the loss, Mary Washington still holds a considerable advantage in the series (24-6-7) as today's victory marked just the sixth time that St. Mary's has beaten the Eagles.

The Seahawks (4-4-2, 1-1-0 CAC) opened up the scoring in the 25th minute as Sawyer collected a pass from junior forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and put the shot past senior goalkeeper Charlotte Owens (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) for a 1-0 St. Mary's lead at 24:57. St. Mary's carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime as Sawyer converted on a penalty kick at 31:18.

Mary Washington (7-3-1, 1-1-0 CAC) controlled the tempo in the second half, outshooting the Seahawks 9-3 and posting a 3-0 corner kick margin. The Eagles got one back at 68:05 as junior forward Jessica Bednarcik (Thornton, Pa./Bayard Rustin) connected with fellow classmate Michelle Gibbons (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal) for her second goal of the season.

The Eagles continued to attack and peppered first-year Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) with six more shots, including two by senior forward Sam Lockley (Nantucket, Mass./Tabor Academy) in the final 10 minutes that forced Larkin to make the saves and preserve the 2-1 victory.

Mary Washington finished with a 13-8 edge in shots as well as a 6-1 margin in corner kicks.

Larkin picked up all three of her saves in the second half while Owens was subbed out at halftime after giving up both goals. Sophomore Sara Armor (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) made one stop in her 45 minutes of play.

The Seahawks continue with conference play this Saturday, October 4th as St. Mary's takes on Wesley College (7-2, 0-1 CAC) at Seahawk Stadium for Hawktoberfest at 2:00 p.m.
