Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team dropped their third Capital Athletic Conference game of the season, falling 3-1 at the University of Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon.
The loss maintains St. Mary's (8-8, 4-3 CAC) third in the conference standings with two games remaining in the regular season – one on the road at Southern Virginia University and one home against York College of Pennsylvania.
The contest was scoreless until the 35th minute when sophomore forward Jacob Burke (Spotsylvania, Va./Chancellor) tallied the first of his two goals of the day for a 1-0 Eagle lead at 34:32. Mary Washington struck again 40 seconds later behind sophomore forward Carlos Mendoza's (Herndon, Va./Herndon) fifth goal of the season.
Mary Washington (8-6-2, 5-2-0 CAC) headed into halftime with a 3-0 lead as Burke connected with sophomore midfielder Lino Gallo (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) for his second score at 42:24.
The Seahawks kept Mary Washington off the scoreboard in the second half as first-year goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) made six second-half saves.
Sophomore midfielder Yonah Zeitz (Potomac, Md./Edmund Burke) broke through for St. Mary's at 62:36 as Zeitz finished off a pass from senior captain Matt Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) to avoid the shutout.
The Eagles held a 20-4 shot advantage and posted a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Haussler finished the contest with a season-best eight saves while senior Tyler Back (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) came up with one stop in Mary Washington's fourth consecutive win.
The Seahawks will look to get back in the win column this Saturday, October 25th when they travel to Buena Vista, Virginia to take on CAC foe, Southern Virginia University (5-12, 1-5 CAC), at 4:30 p.m.
