Box Score Buena Vista, Va. – Seven different Seahawks scored in the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team's 7-2 third Capital Athletic Conference road win over Southern Virginia University Saturday afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) paced the Seahawks in the win as Tait had a hand four of the seven scores.
With today's win, St. Mary's (9-8, 5-3 CAC) is now in a three-way tie for second in the conference standings with Penn State Harrisburg and University of Mary Washington. The six berths for the 2014 CAC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament will be decided on Wednesday, October 29th as all 10 conference teams play their final regular-season contests.
Senior midfielder Rickie Kalama (Bel Air, Md./Aberdeen) put the Seahawks on the scoreboard first as Kalama received a cross in the middle from Tait before finding the back of the net for a 1-0 SMCM lead at 28:15.
It was 4-2 in favor of St. Mary's at 41:44 as five goals were scored in a nearly 11-minute span. Tait and sophomores Zach Fontenot (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) and Kyle Reichard (Crofton, Md./South River) each tallied a goal for the Seahawks while first-year Anthony Skeeters (Walnut, Calif./Cottonwood) and sophomore forward Josh Smith (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) picked up goals for Southern Virginia.
St. Mary's kept the Knights off the scoreboard in the second half while tacking on three more. First-year forward Alessandro Burlew (Mt. Airy, Md./Good Counsel) netted the first goal of the stanza before Reichard assisted on the next two goals, setting up first-year forwards Emmanuel Kanneh (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and Emmanuel Oppong (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) in the middle of the box.
The Seahawks posted a 22-13 shot advantage for the game, including doubling up on Southern Virginia, 14-7, in the first half. St. Mary's also earned a 7-2 margin in corner kicks.
First-year goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) finished the game with four saves, including three in the second half, for his eighth win of the season while junior Efren Gutierrez (Santa Barbara, Calif./BYU) notched five stops in 82 minutes of action.
The Seahawks will look to finish the regular season on a high note as St. Mary's welcomes York College of Pennsylvania (6-6-5, 3-3-2 CAC) to Seahawk Stadium for its final CAC contest of the season on Wednesday, October 29th. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
