St. Mary's Women's Soccer, Southern Virginia Play to 1-1 Draw

Box Score

Buena Vista, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team rallied for a 1-1 tie with host Southern Virginia University Saturday night in Capital Athletic Conference action.

Tonight's result marks the second consecutive time that St. Mary's (8-5-3, 5-2-1 CAC) and Southern Virginia (6-9-3, 2-5-1 CAC) have ended in a dead heat. In their first-ever meeting last season, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Seahawks find themselves third in the conference standings with 16 points behind Christopher Newport University (22 points) and Salisbury University (21 points). St. Mary's will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday, October 29th when the Seahawks welcome Marymount (Va.) University to Seahawk Stadium for the final CAC matchup of the regular season at 1:30 p.m. on Senior Day.

It was a scoreless first half with St. Mary's edging the Knights, 6-4, in shots. Senior goalkeeper MaKenzie Cox (Alpine, Utah/Lone Peak) kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard with four first-half saves while first-year Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) had two to keep Southern Virginia at bay.

Sophomore forward Tatiana Monsen (Orem, Utah/Orem) finally broke through for the Knights in the second stanza, giving her team a 1-0 lead at 68:51 as first-year Mckenzie Cottle (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood) assisted on the play.

Southern Virginia seemed to have the win in hand with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. However, junior defender Morgan Dorset (Bethesda, Md./Quince Orchard) changed all that with her second goal of her career at 86:18, scoring off a free kick.

In the 30 minutes of overtime, St. Mary's generated five shots and one corner kick to the Knights' three shots. Junior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) put a shot on frame at 109:18 but Cox denied it to preserve the 1-1 draw.

St. Mary's finished with a 20-9 advantage in shots as well as a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.

Larkin posted five saves in the team's third draw of the season, stretching their unbeaten streak to three, while Cox had eight stops in extending her team's unbeaten streak to two.

Prior to the start of Wednesday's game against Marymount, the Seahawks will honor their three seniors – midfielder Lexy McCarty (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg), midfielder/forward Liz Mosher (Bethesda, Md./Madeira), and defender Caryn Thompson (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville).
