Box Score Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team picked up their first Capital Athletic Conference loss Wednesday afternoon, falling 2-0 at No. 25 Salisbury University. It was a battle of conference unbeaten as both sides came in with a 2-0 league record.
Salisbury (9-0-3, 3-0-0 CAC), who is ranked No. 4 in the South Atlantic region, edged the Seahawks in shots by an 11-10 margin. However, St. Mary's doubled up on the host Sea Gulls with an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Seahawks (6-6, 2-1 CAC) posted a 5-3 shot margin and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks during the first half. They generated two shots off corners – one of which was a header by first-year defender Andrew Battin (Boyds, Md./Clarksburg) in the 19th minute that was knocked away by senior goalkeeper Drew Staedeli (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron).
Salisbury staked an early 1-0 lead at 10:39 as senior forward Tanner East (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) dribbled up the left side, cut back, and shot to the back post. The St. Mary's defense kept the Sea Gulls off the scoreboard for the rest of the first half.
The hosts upped the tempo in the second half, notching an 8-5 edge in shots and a 4-2 margin in corners. Senior keeper Nate Ramsland (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) turned away a shot before Salisbury broke through again at 79:09. First-year forward Brooks Zentgraf (Cambridge, Md./St. Peter and Paul) drove right, pulled Ramsland and his shot, which was initially blocked, rolled in.
In his first action since August 30th, Ramsland came up with three saves in 83 minutes while first-year Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) finished out the game. Staedeli tallied two stops in Salisbury's eighth shutout while extending its unbeaten streak to 12.
The Seahawks will look to get back in the win column on Sunday, October 12th when St. Mary's welcomes Marymount (Va.) University to Seahawk Stadium for another conference tilt at 3:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the St. Mary's field hockey game against Virginia Wesleyan College.
