Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomores Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Haley Riebling (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) each scored in double digits in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team against University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon. Despite Haller and Riebling's performances, St. Mary's dropped a 79-40 Capital Athletic Conference decision.
Haller paced all scorers with game-best 14 points for her fifth double-digit scoring performance of the season while adding five rebounds. Riebling contributed a dozen as she connected on a career-high four three-pointers.
Mary Washington (5-2, 3-0 CAC) staked a 21-10 advantage with nine minutes in the first half as senior guard Claire Haeuptle (Robbinsville, N.J./Peddie) knocked down three long-range shots. The Seahawks turned it around with an 8-0 run to pull within three at 6:39 as Riebling and first-year guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) each scored from downtown.
Riebling and Haller kept St. Mary's (0-6, 0-3 CAC) within three before the Eagles closed out the half on a 9-3 run for a 35-26 halftime advantage. Haller owned 11 first-half points while Haeuptle led Mary Washington in the first 20 minutes with nine points.
The Eagles broke the game open with a 22-1 run to start the second half and never looked back en route to their third straight victory. UMW received a balanced effort on the boards as they out-rebounded St. Mary's by a 55-32 margin.
Three Mary Washington players tallied double-figure point totals as sophomore center Brianne Comden (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) and first-year guard Kendall Parker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) each notched 12 points while senior guard Erin Drumheller (Winchester, Va./Sherando) chipped in 11 off the bench.
The Seahawks will get through finals week before traveling to Chestertown, Maryland to take on Washington College in non-conference action next Saturday, December 20th at 1:00 p.m.
