Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Juniors Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) and Lee Jordan (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Free Academy) led the No. 25 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team Saturday afternoon to a convincing 79-55 win over Capital Athletic Conference newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg.
St. Mary's (14-5, 8-3 CAC) dominated every statistical category as LaGuerre poured in a season-best 25 points, six assists, and five rebounds while Jordan came off the bench to notch career-highs of 12 points and eight boards. Senior captain Kyle Wise (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) put on a well-rounded performance with a career-best eight assists, seven points, and five caroms.
You knew it was going to be an exciting game when the Seahawks opened up the game with a LaGuerre dunk just three seconds in. Harrisburg (6-13, 3-8 CAC) stayed on St. Mary's heels in the first 10 minutes of the game, never experiencing a deficit bigger than four points. A LaGuerre layup at 9:40 sparked a 19-2 run to close out the half and really break the game wide open.
LaGuerre netted 20 of his season-best 25 points in the first half as he shot 7-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from downtown, as the Seahawks owned a 38-21. Seniors Kenny Stone (Philadelphia, Pa./Stone) and William Doyle (Franklin, Va./Tidewater Academy) each tallied six points to pace the Lions at intermission.
Back-to-back three-pointers by LaGuerre and senior captain Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) in the first 32 seconds of the second half led to a 21-9 Seahawk run over a seven-minute span for St. Mary's biggest lead of the contest, 59-30 at 13:06 on a tip-in by senior guard Christopher Hutchinson (Baltimore, Md./New Town).
St. Mary's shot 47.6% (30-of-63) from the floor, including 9-of-23 from behind the arc, while posting a 41-30 rebounding margin. The Seahawks were also accurate at the free throw line, going 10-of-11.
Doyle notched 11 more in the final 20 minutes to finish with a team-best 17 points while first-year Winton Lyle (Washington, D.C./Bullis School) added 10 points, two boards, and two assists off the bench.
St. Mary's will wrap up its four-game home stand next Wednesday, February 5th with a Top 25 battle as No. 12 University of Mary Washington comes to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a CAC tilt at 8:00 p.m.
