Box Score Newport News, Va. – Senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) collected her fourth 20-point game of the season as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team dropped a 69-52 Capital Athletic Conference decision to No. 16 Christopher Newport University Wednesday evening.
Lewis put up 20 points and three assists while senior Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) wrapped up her 10th double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
As a team, the Seahawks (9-14, 5-10 CAC) out-rebounded Christopher Newport, 42-38, as seniors Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) and Myeisha Wallace (West River, Md./Southern) each pulled down eight boards in addition to Pruden's 10.
St. Mary's went to the line 19 times during the game and made all but three free throws but 26 turnovers hindered the Seahawk offense, leading to 26 CNU points.
The Captains (21-3, 13-2 CAC) never trailed in the game and owned a double-digit advantage from the 9:49-minute of the first half. Junior forward Camry Green (Richmond, Va.) poured in 16 first-half points to lead Christopher Newport to a 36-21 halftime lead. Pruden had nine points and five boards in the first 20 minutes while St. Mary's shot a low 25.0% (7-of-28) from the floor.
St. Mary's shooting was much improved in the second half as CNU only outscored the Seahawks, 33-31. The Seahawks posted a 42.3-field goal percentage (11-of-25) to Christopher Newport's 41.2% (14-of-34) over the final 20 minutes.
Senior forward Nicole Mitchell (Falls Church, Va.) finished with a double-double of a game-high 22 points and 10 caroms while Green also ended up with a double-double, contributing 21 points and game-best 10 rebounds.
St. Mary's will wrap up the regular season on the road on Saturday, February 22nd as the Seahawks travel to Dover, Delaware to face Wesley College at 1:00 p.m.
