Box Score Lexington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team notched their second straight loss Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 on the road to the host Washington and Lee University Generals.
Washington and Lee (5-3) came out firing in the first half, outshooting the Seahawks by a 7-1 margin and posting a 5-2 edge in penalty corners. Senior captain Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) and the Seahawk defense did a great job in keeping the Generals off the scoreboard in the first half as Bishop recorded four saves.
St. Mary's (3-3) was awarded its lone penalty corner of the second stanza early on at 36:00 and generated a shot by sophomore forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) which was denied by junior goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver).
After nearly 15 minutes of play in the final half of action, the Generals broke through at 48:30 as sophomore forward Allie Barry (Beverly, Mass./Brooks School) scored alone in transition. Senior captain Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) put up another scoring opportunity for St. Mary's at 61:36 but Axelrod kept it out of the cage.
W&L posted a 12-4 shot advantage and 7-3 margin in penalty corners for the game.
Bishop finished with her four first-half saves while Axelrod picked up three second-half saves for her second shutout of the season.
St. Mary's will be right back at it as the Seahawks take on Bridgewater (Va.) College (3-4) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
