Seahawk Field Hockey Tops Randolph-Macon

Box Score

Ashland, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team won their second straight game with a 2-1 non-conference victory at Randolph-Macon College Tuesday afternoon. With today's win, head coach Katie Newkirk '06 tied the school's all-time record for wins.

Newkirk now owns a 56-51 career record in her seventh season as the Seahawk field hockey mentor. Her 56 wins matches the record set by Megan Block, who coached at St. Mary's from 2003-2007 and posted a five-year mark of 56-30.

The Seahawks (5-3) picked up their sixth consecutive win over Randolph-Macon this afternoon to improve their series record to 9-3 over the Yellow Jackets since their first meeting in 1994.

Junior forward Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) put St. Mary's on the scoreboard first as Collins finished off a pass from junior midfielder Ally Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) at 2:51 following one of two first-half Seahawk penalty corners.

Before the half was over, the game was tied at 1-1 behind senior defender Carrie Jacobs' (Orange, Va./Orange County) goal at 24:42. The R-MC goal came off one of the team's five penalty corners in the first 35 minutes.

First-year Nicole Lertora (Olney, Md./Blake) broke up the draw on another Seahawk penalty corner as senior captain Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) inserted the ball and Lertora found the back of the cage at 37:48.

Five second-half saves by senior captain Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) helped St. Mary's preserve its one-goal lead for the team's fifth win of the season.

Randolph-Macon edged the Seahawks, 22-20, in shots while doubling up the visitors in corners by a 12-6 margin.

Bishop finished the afternoon with nine saves for a .900 save percentage while junior Shannon McMurray (Stafford, Va.) picked up 11 as Randolph-Macon remains winless on the season.

St. Mary's will face its sixth Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent of the season in Eastern Mennonite University (1-7) on Saturday, September 27th as the Seahawks welcome EMU to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 2:00 p.m.
