Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Head Coach Katie Newkirk '06 (Columbia, Md.) became the school's all-time winningest coach Saturday afternoon. The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team posted a 3-0 shutout win over Eastern Mennonite University, their sixth Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent of the season.
With a 57-51 record in her seventh season as the Seahawk field hockey mentor, Newkirk surpasses her former college coach, Megan Block, who coached at St. Mary's from 2003-2007 and posted a five-year mark of 56-30.
The Seahawks (6-3) have now three in a row with today's win. St. Mary's is now 2-6 all-time against Eastern Mennonite with its second straight victory over the Royals. Last season, the Seahawks snapped a six-game skid against EMU with a 5-0 road win in Harrisonburg, Virginia. St. Mary's is now 5-1 against ODAC foes this year.
Following a scoreless first half, junior forward Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) gave St. Mary's a 1-0 lead at 36:21 as Collins one-timed a cross from senior captain Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand). This was Collins' second score of the season.
First-year Nicole Lertora (Olney, Md./Blake) picked up her second of the season as well as Lertora put back a loose ball into the middle of the cage at 40:48 for a two-goal advantage.
St. Mary's went up 3-0 at 54:19 as sophomore forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) from the far right post into the lower left corner.
The Seahawks posted a 21-6 shot advantage as well as a 9-3 margin in penalty corners.
Seniors Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) and Kelly Shuman (Columbia, Md./Atholton) combined for the team's second shutout win of the season. Shuman registered two saves in the final 15:41 of the contest.
Sophomore Hannah Daley (Lothian, Md./Southern) tallied nine saves in the Royals' (2-8) third shutout loss of 2014.
St. Mary's will be back in action next Saturday, October 4th when the Seahawks open up Capital Athletic Conference action against Frostburg State University in Seahawk Stadium at 12:00 p.m. during Hawktoberfest.
