Tait Leads Seahawk Men's Soccer to Home-Opening Win

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team opened up the home portion of their schedule with the SMDHOTELS.com Seahawk Classic Saturday afternoon and posted a 2-1 non-conference win over Bridgewater (Va.) College off the foot of sophomore midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends).

In the other half of today's tournament action, Salisbury University (2-0-1), who is ranked sixth in the South Atlantic region, shut out Baldwin Wallace University (1-2) by a 2-0 score. Salisbury will face Bridgewater tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.

Tait netted the game-winning goal with just 2:09 remaining in regulation as he worked his way around a couple of defenders before firing in a shot into the lower right corner past a diving senior Kevin Morris (Knoxville, Tenn./Westminster [Md.]).

The Seahawk win snaps a two-game skid against Bridgewater as St. Mary's last defeated the Eagles in 2009 by a 4-0 margin.

St. Mary's (3-1) tallied a 16-10 advantage in shots while edging BC, 7-5, in corner kicks.

Following a scoreless first half, sophomore forward Zach Fontenot (Middletown, Md./Middletown) broke the deadlock with his second tally of the season at 49:34. Fontenot collected a slant pass from first-year forward Alessandro Burlew (Mt. Airy, Md./Good Counsel) and then found the lower right corner.

Sophomore forward Max Chacon (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) was in the right place at the right time for Bridgewater (0-3) as Chacon picked up a misplayed defensive clear and worked wide of first-year goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) to find the back of the net for the equalizer at 83:52. This was the Eagles' first tally of 2014 as BC entered the weekend having been outscored, 6-0.

Haussler needed just two saves to pick up his second win of the season while Morris made eight stops for Bridgewater.

St. Mary's will look to continue its winning ways tomorrow as they take on Baldwin Wallace at 3:00 p.m. in the final day of the SMDHOTELS.com Seahawk Classic.
