Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team posted a 2-0 record in the SMDHOTELS.com Seahawk Classic following a 2-1 non-conference win over Baldwin Wallace University Sunday afternoon, stretching their win streak to four.
Following a scoreless first half, the Seahawks (4-1) scored two quick goals in just over a minute to stake a 2-0 lead at 49:20. First-year forward Alessandro Burlew (Mt. Airy, Md./Good Counsel) put his team on the board first as Burlew weaved in and out of several defenders before driving the ball inside the near post at 48:15.
Sophomore midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) then answered the call once again with his second consecutive game-winning goal as Tait launched a rocket into the top left corner from the top right corner of the box.
Baldwin Wallace (1-3) responded right away as senior midfielder Michael Brennan (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) ripped a laser of a shot from 25 yards out into the far right side netting to cut his team's deficit to one at 50:54.
St. Mary's was able to hold on for the one-goal victory and its fourth consecutive win of the season. The Yellow Jackets edged the home team in shots, 14-13, and doubled up in corner kicks, 6-3.
First-year goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) put up five saves in improving to 3-0 on the season while first-year Ryan Asbury (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) recorded five saves in his team's second straight loss.
In the other half of today's tournament action, Salisbury University (3-0-1), who is ranked sixth in the South Atlantic region, shut out Bridgewater College (0-4) by a 2-0 score.
St. Mary's and Salisbury both went undefeated at this weekend's tournament but the Sea Gulls claimed the tournament title with a +4 goal differential, outscoring their opponents 4-0 over two games. This is Salisbury's fourth Seahawk Classic title since the tournament's inception in 2009.
The Sea Gulls' senior forward Benjamin Aryeetey was named the tournament MVP after a goal and an assist in his team's 2-0 weekend. Aryeetey netted the game-winner against Baldwin Wallace on Saturday and then assisted on the game-winner against Bridgewater.
St. Mary's remains at home for its next match, welcoming McDaniel College to Seahawk Stadium on Saturday, September 13th for a non-conference game at 4:00 p.m.
