St. Mary's Women's Soccer Capitalizes in Overtime Play for Win

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior captain Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) scores in overtime in the 91st minute against the University of Mary Washington Eagles for the Seahawks' fourth Capital Athletic Conference win on Saturday afternoon.

Following a scoreless first half, the Seahawks (6-5, 4-0 CAC) started off the second period strong with their sights on a goal. First-year midfielder Jenna Pastel (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) took advantage of a deflection off a defender, taking control of the ball and striking it for her first collegiate goal just 30 seconds into the start of the second half.

St. Mary's and the Eagles (7-6, 2-2 CAC) were head-to-head in shots with eight each. The Seahawks had only two more corner kicks than Mary Washington with a differential of 7-5. The intensity of the game rose during the second half.

In the 75th minute, the Eagles benefited from a pass by first-year defender Mackenzie Kirkham (Centreville, Va./Westfield) to senior midfielder Lizzie Weast (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) for the equalizer and the only goal for Mary Washington.

The game headed into overtime as neither side had a valid scoring opportunity in the over the final 15 minutes of regulation.

The Seahawks would not go down easy as senior forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) quickly took control of the extra period with a tremendous pass from the left that led Kostelnik to her fifth goal of the season. St. Mary's now sits alone atop of the conference standings with 12 points and an undefeated 4-0 CAC record.

The Seahawks will be back in action at Seahawk Stadium on Wednesday, October 14 as they take on regionally-ranked Christopher Newport University at 3:30 p.m. in another CAC tilt.
