Box Score Frostburg, Md. – Sophomore Nicole Lertora's (Olney, Md./Blake) goal 10 minutes into the second half held strong to give the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season. St. Mary's posted a 1-0 shutout of host Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon to move to third in the conference standings.
St. Mary's (6-5, 1-1 CAC) doubled up the Bobcats (7-4, 0-1 CAC) in shots, 4-2, while penalty corners were equal at two apiece in the first half. However, neither side was able to find the back of the cage.
Lertora broke the scoreless draw at 45:35 following a broken corner. Lertora fired off a shot for the 1-0 Seahawk lead after receiving a pass from senior midfielder Grace Reingruber (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase).
The Seahawk defense kept the Frostburg offense to just two shots in the second stanza to hand the Bobcats a loss in their CAC opener.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished with two saves for her second shutout of the season. Junior Jackie Glover (King George, Va./King George) tallied seven stops in Frostburg's second shutout loss of the season.
St. Mary's notched a 12-4 shot advantage while Frostburg State earned a 9-6 margin in penalty corners for the game.
St. Mary's will continue with conference play on Wednesday, October 14 when the Seahawks travel to York College of Pennsylvania (6-6, 0-2 CAC) for a game at 4:00 p.m.
