Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team battled hard Wednesday afternoon but came up short against No. 13 Christopher Newport University. Junior midfielder Harry Nodwell (Devon, England) netted the game-winning goal with just 6:59 remaining in regulation to give Christopher Newport a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference win over St. Mary's.

CNU (10-0-4, 3-0-2 CAC) stretched its unbeaten streak to 14 while the Seahawks (6-6-1, 2-3-0 CAC) drops its third straight. The Captains, who ranked second in the South Atlantic region, are now atop of the conference standings with 11 points while St. Mary's is tied for sixth with six points.

Junior midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends School) gave the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead at 2:05 as Tait capitalized on a misplayed clear by first-year goalkeeper Zach Pedini (Midlothian, Va./James River).

St. Mary's carried the one-goal advantage into halftime and through the first 22 minutes of the second stanza. However, the Captains continued their offensive pressure and finally broke through at 67:19. CNU earned a penalty kick following a handball in the box. Senior forward Ryan Balfour (Shepperton, England) converted the PK for the equalizer.

Nodwell received a short cross from junior midfielder Preston Key (Danville, Va./Carlisle School) and one-timed the ball into the top corner for the eventual game-winner at 83:01.

Christopher Newport finished the game with a 25-9 advantage in shots as well as a 7-2 margin in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) tallied seven saves while Pedini recorded two stops in his first career win.

St. Mary's will be back in action this Saturday, October 17 when the Seahawks travel to Western Maryland to take on Frostburg State University (8-4-1, 2-2-1 CAC) in another CAC tilt at 5:00 p.m.
