Seahawk Women's Soccer Battle Hard but fall to Christopher Newport

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team put up a tough fight but were unable to keep their Capital Athletic Conference win streak alive as the Seahawks fell 2-0 to regionally-ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium.

St. Mary's (6-6, 4-1 CAC) and Christopher Newport (9-3-1, 4-1-0 CAC), who is ranked eighth in the South Atlantic region, are now tied for first in the conference standings with 12 points.

Both the Seahawks and Christopher Newport did not find the back of the net in the first half of the game. Concurrently, the two sides played a strong defensive game, not allowing either offense to attack with ease. St. Mary's and the Captains both took five shots in the first half while corner kicks were even at three apiece.

The game was physical with the Seahawks recording 10 fouls to Christopher Newport's seven. One of these fouls was costly to St. Mary's as the Captains were able to take advantage of a penalty kick in the second half. In the 78th minute, sophomore defender Alexis Haycraft (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) shot a sharp penalty kick which she netted into the left top corner of the goal, breaking the scoreless draw.

Junior midfielder Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart) paced the Seahawks with five shots (three on goal). St. Mary's had a total of 11 shots for the game. First-year goalkeeper Katie Flores (Towson, Md./Towson) saved a total of three shots directed at her goal.

Christopher Newport had a corner kick advantage of 6-4 for the match and its final corner led to an insurance goal for CNU. At 81:29, senior midfielder Lindsay Mondloch's (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) kicked a corner which bounced off Flores first and then off the near post before entering at the bottom corner and securing the win for the Captains.

The Seahawks stood together as a team today and will look to move forward as they take on Frostburg State University in another CAC matchup on Saturday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m. Before the game begins on Saturday, St. Mary's will recognize its four seniors – Maria Bertoni (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick), Morgan Dorset (Holden Beach, N.C./Quince Orchard [Md.]), Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), and Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) – on Senior Day.
