Seahawk Field Hockey Comes Up Short at York (Pa.)

Box Score

York, Pa. – A late goal downs the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team Wednesday afternoon as the Seahawks succumbed to a 2-1 setback at York College of Pennsylvania in Capital Athletic Conference.

St. Mary's (6-6, 1-2 CAC) and York (7-6, 1-2 CAC) are now tied for third in the conference standings following today's result.

The Seahawks put one on the scoreboard early in the game thanks to an unassisted goal from first-year midfielder Mollie Belson (Columbia, Md./Atholton). Belson collected a loose ball in front of the cage and scored to the right for her fourth tally of the season at 4:18.

St. Mary's headed into intermission with a 1-0 advantage as sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) tallied five stops and defenders Emily Smithers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) and Kevyn Jorgenson (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg Country School) each added a defensive save to keep the Spartans off the board in the first half.

Fourteen shots and 10 penalty corners in the second stanza gave way to York's two goals. First-year midfielder Lindsay Nye (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) batted in a deflection off of sophomore forward Autumn Mallory's (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) stick for the equalizer at 42:19.

Mallory notched the game-winning goal at 65:02 as she deflected a pass from junior midfielder Sydney LaMarsh (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake). York maintained possession of the ball for the remainder of the contest, preventing any counterattack by the Seahawks.

The Spartans posted a 23-11 shot advantage as well as a 14-5 margin in penalty corners.

Thompson finished the game with a season-best 12 saves while first-year goalkeeper Eve Hauptle (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) recorded four stops as York snapped a three-game skid.

St. Mary's will continue with conference play this Saturday, October 17 when the Seahawks welcome No. 15 University of Mary Washington (10-3, 2-0 CAC) for a game at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day. Before the game begins, St. Mary's will honor its four seniors – Emily Bishop (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron), Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), Grace Reingruber (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and Smithers.
