St. Mary's Volleyball Sweeps York (Pa.)

York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team upended the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans in a three-game sweep on Wednesday evening on the road.

"Good fight tonight, glad to see our team focus through and overcome a 10-point deficit in the first set. Captain Autumn Fisher really fired up the team which inspired our players to fight throughout the match," stated second-year head coach Jeremy Sands.

The first set was neck-in-neck competition with both teams showing dominance on the court. The Seahawks (15-10, 5-3 CAC) came back from a 19-9 deficit, going on a 14-4 run to tie the set at 23-23. St. Mary's then took the lead closing out the set at 28-26.

Eighteen of St. Mary's 45 kills for the match came in the first set win. Senior middle hitter Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) would lead the Seahawk offense with 13 kills for the match.

The first set victory set the tone for the match and the Seahawks used the momentum in winning the next two sets.

The Spartans (12-17, 3-5 CAC) worked to improve in the second set and were able to tie at 12-12. However, the Seahawks would take three substantial leads in this set and were able to come on top with a four-point lead and final set score of 25-21.

Junior outside hitter Alli Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) commanded the defensive play for the Seahawks with a total of 14 digs. The Graf sister duo was great for the Seahawk defense as junior Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) also contribute with ten digs for the match.

M. Graf would help set up the offense with 25 assists followed by senior setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) with 10 assists for the game.

The Seahawks would finish the last set with a score of 25-19 to claim their victory for the night. St. Mary's finished the match with a hitting percentage of .228, five blocks, and a total of 63 digs to complete the match.

The Seahawks will be back in action on the road on Friday, October 30 as they take on Frostburg State University at 7:00 p.m. and compete in the Frostburg Spooktacular.
