Box Score Dover, Del. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team is still dancing in the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament as the sixth-seeded Seahawks eliminated No. 3 seed Wesley College, 3-2, in first round action Saturday evening. Today's victory avenges a 3-2 road loss to Wesley during the regular season on October 24.
First-year midfielder Juwan Kearson (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) netted the eventual game-winning goal with 19 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Seahawks (8-8-2) a 3-1 lead. However, Wesley was awarded a penalty kick nine seconds later and junior midfielder Will Mileski (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) converted his second PK of the match at 89:50 for the one-goal margin of victory.
The Wolverines (9-9-1) really controlled the tempo of the contest, posting a 23-8 shot advantage as well as doubling up St. Mary's, 4-2, in corner kicks.
Wesley dominated the first half as they outshot the Seahawks, 11-1, but only managed a 1-0 halftime lead as sophomore goalkeeper Zach Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) picked up three of his four saves in the first 45 minutes. Mileski erased the scoreless draw at 22:57 as he made good on a penalty kick. This season, he is 3-for-3 on PKs with all three coming against St. Mary's.
Junior forward Zach Fontenot (Middletown, Md./Middletown) evened the match at 58:37 with his eight goal of the season off an assist from junior captain Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends School). The Seahawks took the lead for good at 71:17 off the foot of junior forward Luke Barber (Washington, D.C./Walt Whitman) as Barber finished a pass from Kearson.
Senior Ryan Sanders (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) turned away two Seahawk shots as Wesley lost its second straight.
The next obstacle in front of St. Mary's on its way to the CAC championship ring is second-seeded York College of Pennsylvania (9-7-2), who earned a first-round bye. The Seahawks will head to York on Wednesday, November 4 for a semifinal matchup at 2:30 p.m. St. Mary's handed the Spartans a 2-0 setback just four days ago on October 28.
