Salisbury Edges Seahawk Men's Soccer in CAC Action

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team and Salisbury University battled hard on the pitch in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon. Salisbury pulled out the 2-1 conference win and snapped the Seahawks' six-match unbeaten streak.

Today's loss was the first conference defeat for St. Mary's (6-4-1, 2-1-0 CAC) and dropped the Seahawks into a four-way tie for second with Salisbury (7-3, 2-0 CAC), University of Mary Washington (9-3, 2-1 CAC), and Frostburg State University (8-3, 2-1 CAC) as all four teams currently  have six points.

Salisbury, who is ranked sixth in the South Atlantic region, quickly got on the scoreboard as sophomore forward Brooks Zentgraf (Cambridge, Md./St. Peter and Paul) found the back of the net just one minute into the game. The Sea Gulls were awarded a free kick just inside of the 50-yard line near the sideline. Senior defender Cy McNeill (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) stepped up to the free kick, sending a high arching ball into the box which took one high bounce before Zentgraf connected with a diving header for the early 1-0 Sea Gull lead.

The Seahawks evened up the score at 1-1 late in the second half when first-year midfielder Juwan Kearson (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) collected a loose ball just inside the box and sent a shot to the near post which rolled in past an outstretched senior Drew Staedeli (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) at 73:37.

Junior midfielder Leslie Umunna (Bowie, Md./Grundtvig) broke the 1-1 draw at 74:26 as Umunna disrupted a clear attempt and then chipped the ball over sophomore goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) as Haussler rushed out towards Umunna. The Sea Gulls held on for the win despite some great scoring opportunities for St. Mary's.

The Seahawks posted a 20-17 shot advantage (7-5 shots on goal) while edging Salisbury, 5-4, in corner kicks.

Haussler finished with three saves in goal for St. Mary's while Staedeli picked up six stops in keeping the Sea Gulls undefeated in conference play.

St. Mary's will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, October 10 when the Seahawks travel to Arlington, Virginia to take on Marymount (Va.) University (4-6, 0-2 CAC) in another conference matchup at 1:00 p.m.
