St. Mary's Volleyball Win Two Matches

Aston, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team was very successful on the road at the Knights' Fall Classic hosted by Neumann University on Friday as they took on College of  Mount Saint Vincent and host Neumann.

"Our team did well today in both matches. We had some really strong blocking and attacking from our senior middle Karlee Vaillant. Grace Chao did a fabulous job running the offense and playing defense," stated head coach Jeremy Sands. "Autumn Fisher and Alli Graf solidified our serve receive to allow our team to have a highly efficient offense. I'm proud of what we did today and I look forward to continuing this into tomorrow's matches."

The Seahawks (11-6) swept the College of Mount Saint Vincent (5-10) with set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-13. Senior middle hitter Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) put up a total of nine kills followed by junior Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) who had six.

Senior setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) helped the defense with 13 digs while first-year defensive specialist Marissa Dangler (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) also showcased her defensive skills with a season-best 16 digs for the game. With the help of these two players, the Seahawks completed their match with 62 digs.

Goodspeed would lead in blocks with three block solos and two block assists. The team had 11 total blocks to end the game. The team had a total of 36 kills by the end of the match against Mount Saint Vincent as the Seahawks displayed a strong front for the offense.

The final game of Friday night was against Neumann University (9-13) and St. Mary's picked up its fourth straight sweep with set scores of 26-24, 25-10, 25-19.

Junior outside hitter Alli Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) led the Seahawk offense with a total of 11 kills. Senior middle hitter Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) would follow with nine kills recorded. The Seahawks had a total of 36 kills to Neumann's 25.

Chao would set up the offense for the Seahawks and had a total of 19 assists for the game. Chao also had a robust defensive showing with 10 total digs for her second double-double of the season. St. Mary's would lead in blocks with eight to Neumann's two.

The Seahawks will be back in action Saturday, October 10 as they complete action at the Knights' Fall Classic.
